Remote Desktop Connection
Faculty staff are able to access their Faculty desktop through Remote Desktop. This is preinstalled on all Windows XP through to Windows 10 (Pro or Education only) and the app is availiable to download for Mac through the app store.
You will need to connect to the University VPN. For instructions on how to do this, please go here:

and pick the correct link on the left for your operating system.
Please note: Remote Desktop needs to be turned on by one of the IT staff before a connection can be made.
You will also need your IP address, so you will need to contact IT first to obtain this.

Windows 10
To run Remote Desktop on Windows 10, click Start, All Apps, Windows, Remote Desktop Connection.
Once you run Remote Desktop Connection a window will open which will require you to enter:
- For Staff - your machines IP address
Click the Options dropdown arrow, which expands the window with more settings. Click on the Local Resources Tab and then click on More.
The Local Devices and Resources screen will then appear. On this screen, make sure the Drives box is ticked then click OK. This allows your drive on the PC you are currently on to be accessible whilst remoting into your Faculty machine.
Once you are back at the original Remote Desktop Connection screen, click Connect. You will then be asked to enter your CRSID and password.
Enter your username in the form AD\abc12 (where abc12 is your normal Cambridge user id).
These credentials will be the same you usually use to log in to your Faculty machine. Before you click OK, make sure the 'Remember my credentials' button is ticked.
Click OK, you will now be faced with your Faculty desktop.
Windows 8
To run Remote Desktop on Windows 8, move your cursor to the right hand side of the screen to bring up the charms bar, then click Search. In the search box type Remote Desktop Connection, then click the search result that appears.
Once you run Remote Desktop Connection a window will open which will require you to enter:
- For Staff - your machines IP address

Windows 7
To run Remote Desktop on Windows 7, click Start, Accessories, Remote Desktop Connection.

Mac
To view your Macs drives on your PC, see the instructions at the end of these Remote instructions to set this up.
To run Remote Desktop on Mac, first you will need to download the app from the Mac App Store. Download the App that is shown in the top left titled 'Microsoft Remote Desktop'.
Once the app has downloaded and installed open Finder and click Applications. In the Applications folder will now be 'Microsoft Remote Desktop'. Open the app.
Click on the New icon in the top left. This will open the connection edit page as seen in the left image. Under the General tab you will then to to change the following attributes;
Connection Name: Faculty PC/Work
PC Name: Your machines IP address
User name: AD\"Your CRSID - e.g. abc12"
Password: This will be the password you usually use to log onto your Faculty machine.
Exit the General tab. You will now be back at the My Desktops page.
Faculty PC/Work should now appear. Double click Faculty PC/Work, or highlight it and click Start.
Click OK, you will now be faced with your Faculty desktop.
Setting up local folders on Mac
Once the connection to your computer has been set up, click 'Edit' on the new PC connection you just created.
You will now see this:
Click on the 'Redirection' tab and make sure that the 'Enable Folder Redirection' checkbox is unchecked.
Next click on the 'Add Local Folder' icon ( a '+' in the bottom left corner) and name a local folder on your Mac that you wish to see on your PC and set the path of that folder by browsing for it.
Note: You can add multiple folders this way, just repeat this process if needed
Once you have setup local folders this way before you connect toyour PC, if you click Start > Computer you should see a list of extra drives.
Under 'Other Drives' you should now see any local folders that you have just set up.
