Remote Desktop Connection

Staff and PhD students are able to access their Faculty desktop and Undergraduate Students are able to access the Lucy server through Remote Desktop. This is preinstalled on all Windows XP through to Windows 10 (Pro or Education only) and the app is availiable to download for Mac through the app store.

You will need to connect to the University VPN. For instructions on how to do this, please go here:

and pick the correct link on the left for your operating system.

Please note: Remote Desktop Connection will NOT work over the UniofCam wireless service.
Also note: Remote Desktop needs to be turned on by one of the IT staff before a connection can be made. Staff/PhDs will also need your IP address which will be given to you. Please contact IT on Ext. 48160 or it@econ.cam.ac.uk

 

 

Windows 10

To run Remote Desktop on Windows 10, click Start, All Apps, Windows, Remote Desktop Connection.

 

Once you run Remote Desktop Connection a window will open which will require you to enter:

  • For Staff and PhD students - your machines IP address
  • For Students - lucy.ad.econ.private.cam.ac.uk

Click the Options dropdown arrow, which expands the window with more settings. Click on the Local Resources Tab and then click on More.

The Local Devices and Resources screen will then appear. On this screen, make sure the Drives box is ticked then click OK. This allows your drive on the PC you are currently on to be accessible whilst remoting into your Faculty machine.

 Once you are back at the original Remote Desktop Connection screen, click Connect. You will then be asked to enter your CRSID and password. These credentials will be the same you usually use to log in to your Faculty machine. Before you click OK, make sure the 'Remember my credentials' button is ticked.

Click OK, you will now be faced with your Faculty desktop or the Lucy Desktop, the latter of which should look similar to the picture below. On the Lucy desktop is a folder called 'Econ Software'. This folder contains shortcuts to all the Faculty Software.

 


 

Windows 8

To run Remote Desktop on Windows 8, move your cursor to the right hand side of the screen to bring up the charms bar, then click Search. In the search box type Remote Desktop Connection, then click the search result that appears.

Once you run Remote Desktop Connection a window will open which will require you to enter your machines IP address. Or, if you are trying to connect to the 'Lucy' server then use lucy.ad.econ.private.cam.ac.uk

Windows 7

To run Remote Desktop on Windows 7, click Start, Accessories, Remote Desktop Connection.

Once you run Remote Desktop Connection a window will open which will require you to enter your machines IP address. Or, if you are trying to connect to the 'Lucy' server then use lucy.ad.econ.private.cam.ac.uk

Mac

To run Remote Desktop on Mac, first you will need to download the app from the Mac App Store. Download the App that is shown in the top left titled 'Microsoft Remote Desktop'.

 

Once the app has downloaded and installed open Finder and click Applications. In the Applications folder will now be 'Microsoft Remote Desktop'. Open the app.

 

Click on the New icon in the top left. This will open the connection edit page as seen in the left image. Under the General tab you will then to to change the following attributes;

 

Connection Name: Faculty PC/Work
PC Name: Enter either your machines IP address, or if your are trying to connect to the Lucy server use: lucy.ad.econ.private.cam.ac.uk
User name: AD\"Your CRSID - e.g. abc12"
Password: This will be the password you usually use to log onto your Faculty machine, or if the

 

Exit the General tab. You will now be back at the My Desktops page.
Faculty PC/Work should now appear. Double click Faculty PC/Work, or highlight it and click Start.
